Brenda Bailey-Burks Named Classified Employee of the Year 2012!
Compassionate. Dedicated. Positive. Leader. Above and beyond. Professional. A rock. Each is a term used by colleagues, administrators, parents and students to describe Brenda Bailey-Burks, the 2012 Classified Employee of the Year. Bailey-Burks is not only the embodiment of an outstanding employee, but an amazing individual.

Bailey-Burks, a Special Education technician at Serra, provides assistance to medically fragile students in the Moderate/Severe Specialized Academic Instruction classroom, and also provides specialized care to one individual student. In addition to caring for the students, she assists with overall logistics, lesson planning, creating and implementing goals, and has even served at times as interim teacher.

“Brenda has been a necessary and crucial component to the Moderate/Severe SAI classroom,” said colleague Angela Martin. “The classroom would not run as smoothly without her.”

“Bailey-Burks is in every sense of the word, a member of her student’s families,” said Serra Vice Principal Julie Nydam. “Her caring and commitment to special needs students and their families is without parallel in my 12 years as an administrator.”

Congratulations to Brenda Bailey-Burks on her selection as 2012 Classified Employee of the Year!  To read more, go to:  http://www.sandi.net/Page/37650

Washington Post Recognizes America’s Most Challenging High Schools
Nine high schools and one charter school in the San Diego Unified School District have placed on the Washington Post list of America's Most Challenging High Schools.  Serra High School was on that list!  Way to go, Conquistadors!

The newspaper ranks schools based on the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests taken by its students, compared to the number of students at the school.
There are more than 22,000 high schools in the nation; according to the newspaper, fewer than nine percent are on the list of Most Challenging High Schools.

"It's very important that we challenge our students to achieve," said Superintendent Bill Kowba. "Inclusion on this list means that these schools are doing a great job of motivating their students to do better."
To read more, go to the Washington Post website.

No PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) Next Year.  Due to limited resources, Serra will not be able to offer the PSAT next year.  This was a difficult decision to make; however, with the deep budgets cuts we are faced with, the school simply cannot afford to provide this service to the students.

Got an old digital camera to donate?  Serra High School's Photography class is looking for donations of digital cameras for class use during the fall semester.  If you have a camera you’d like to donate, we’ll gladly take them off your hands!  Please contact Mr. Marc Thomas: mthomas3@sandi.net
