Dear Serra High School families,

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year! The Q Connection is Serra High’s weekly e-newsletter, sent to our families to keep them informed and connected to the school and the community.

The teachers and staff would like to thank the PTO for sponsoring their annual “Back-to-School” teachers/staff luncheon. The teachers and staff appreciated the delicious food and the warm welcome back to school!

NEWS

First day of school is Tuesday, September 6^th. Please make sure your student gets plenty of rest the night before and eats a good breakfast on Tuesday morning. They should come to school with a backpack and basic school supplies. Class schedules will be distributed to the students beginning at 7:00am. School begins at 7:30am and we want all students to be in their seats by 7:30am and ready to learn.

Please understand the class schedules are set. August 29^th was the last day for changes.

If your student did not come to Orientation, and did not contact the school prior to the first day, they will receive their orientation packet and class schedule on Tuesday.

Turn in all paperwork to the Attendance Office windows before school or at lunch.

· What if I am a new student and need to enroll?

Go to the theatre.

· What if I want to change my schedule?

Last day for changes was August 29, 2011.

· What if I have nothing in the box?

Go to the theatre.

Please note Serra High School’s dress code policy. We understand the weather will be warm the first several weeks of school but keep in mind there is a dress code policy at Serra. Students are expected to exercise good judgment, safety, good taste and modesty regarding their dress and grooming. Any clothing considered to be disruptive to the educational process is inappropriate for school.

From the Nurse’s Office

Proof of Tdap required. Thank you for bringing your student’s vaccination records to the office. If you have not done so, please bring a copy to the school nurse as soon as possible. Per the new state law, all incoming 7th-12th graders must provide proof of Tdap (Whooping Cough) booster immunization before entering the 2011-12 school year. Remember, No Tdap, No School!

Medications at school. If your student needs to take medication while at school (including inhalers), they must have a doctor’s order on file in the Nurse’s office. Forms are located on the Serra website under the Health Office section, or stop by the Nurse’s office to complete the form.

From the Library

If your student did not return their textbooks last year, they will need to check with the librarian about returning them or paying fines for any lost books. Please be aware there may be a delay in getting class schedules if textbooks were not returned.

Drop-off/pick-up. Please note the front circular driveway in front of the school is closed in the mornings and afternoons. Plan to drop off and pick up your student in the side parking lots.

Volunteering at Serra High School – GET INVOLVED! 

Welcome back, Serra volunteers! We’re looking forward to a great year. There are many ways to offer your time and talent as a volunteer: working with the PTO, Serra Foundation, sports/music/club boosters, etc. Help will be needed throughout the school year at various events. We encourage our parents and community members to get involved and volunteer at school.

Please remember that all volunteers must have a current volunteer application and proof of a negativeTB test on file with the school. This includes anyone who has any contact with students, including those involved with booster clubs, snack bar help, and fundraising. It is extremely important for the safety of our students that the proper paperwork is on file for every volunteer. Thank you for understanding the importance of this issue.

Welcome to the final Q Connection of the 2010-11 school year. 
 
As we say goodbye to the class of 2011, here are a few items that you need to keep in mind as you plan for the 2011-12 school year.
 

1. All 7th through 12th graders need a whooping cough (pertussis) shot before starting the new school year.  Putting it off will stall the registration process for your student.   Avoid the rush and get it taken care of now.  Visit http://shotsforschool.org for more information.
2. Serra High will no longer be able to track Community Service Hours for students.   While we still encourage students to give back to their community, we simply do not have the resources to track students’ hours.  Remember that Community Service is not a requirement of the school. 
3. Work Permits: If your child wants a summer job they will need to have a work permit. Since the school is closed for the summer, they will need to get their work permit signed at the Work Permit Office at the Revere Center.  The address is 6735 Gifford Way, Room 3, San Diego, CA 92111.  Call (858) 627-7355 for more information.   Also:  ALL work permits expire in September.  If your student wishes to continue to work after the summer, they get a new work permit in the fall.
4. PSAT:  At this point in time, Serra will not be able to offer the PSAT in October.   We do not have the funding to pay for proctors and we cannot charge extra to pay for proctors.    We do not know which, if any, schools will be giving the test.  If we learn of any testing sites  or if are able to find a new funding source, we will publish the information in the Q-Connection next Fall.   http://www.collegeboard.org/

Important Information for Seniors

Graduation Practice will take place on Thursday, June 9th from 1:00- 3:00pm (or until finished). Seniors, please meet In the Gym. The Senior BBQ will follow Graduation Practice and is free to All Seniors. Caps & Gowns will be distributed at the Senior BBQ. (Seniors please note the Library will be closed after Grad Practice so clear your indebtedness before!)

Graduation is on Friday, June 10 at 2:00 PM at Golden Hall, downtown. Student Report Time: 12:30pm.

Diplomas will be distributed on Monday, June 13th from 8:00-11:00am. Only the Graduate may pick up their diploma. Graduates must show a photo ID.

Serra High School is hosting a FREE Summer Academy 2011 Student Leadership Conference featuring the “7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” Training. Students will have 29 sessions to choose from including opportunities to work on their summer readings or assignments from their AP or other courses to prepare them for the 2011-2012 school year. Community Service Certificates are ready for pick up. If your student turned in community service hours to Ms. Timmins or Ms. Leboffe during the school year, they can pick up their certificates in Room 201B next week during lunch or after school

The Serra High Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) Wants You! The PTO is looking for a few good men and women to serve on their 2011-2012 Executive Board. Several positions are still open, including President. The Board meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of every month in the Family Resource Center (Room 231). Being an active Board Member is a great way to stay informed and be involved in your child’s school! If you are interested in being a part of the PTO, contact SerraHighPTO@gmail.com. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
    
The Senior Boosters Group need a few more chaperones, donations of water and licorice buckets for the bus ride up to Disneyland, and volunteers to help set up and clean up for the Senior BBQ on June 9th. If you can help with any of the above, please email jd3hopps@aol.com or gmcparlane@att.net.

The Vista Grande Country Fair, scheduled for Saturday, June 4th, is in need of student volunteers to help run game booths. Shifts are 9:00am-1:00pm or 12:30-4:30pm. Volunteers who serve a minimum of 4 hours will receive a free meal. The Fair will be held at Vista Grande Elementary School. Just a reminder to parents the California legislature passed Assembly Bill 354, mandating that all 7th-12th graders must get a Tdap vaccination before they can enter school for the 2011-2012 school year.  This vaccine is for the prevention of Tetanus, Diptheria, and Pertussis (also known as Whooping Cough). Please check your child’s vaccination record and if they have not received this immunization, please take them to your family physician, or a county health clinic and get them vaccinated as soon as possible.  You must provide proof of this immunization to the school nurse before school enrollment next September.  If you have questions about this please refer to the information posted on our school website under the Health Office (http://serra.sandi.net/health/)

For your convenience, Walgreens is partnering with the above schools to offer these vaccination clinics.  Any student or family member of San Diego Unified may attend these clinics. Forms should be submitted to Walgreens at least 1 week prior to the Tdap clinic date to allow for insurance billing. Additional forms will be available on-site at the clinic for last minute decisions. Last minute decisions would require parents to be present for signature and the full cash price of $63.99 may be required. On clinic day, all forms of payment are accepted: cash, check, credit card.  Visit the Serra website to download a form/permission slip.

Serra High School Senior Exhibitions - 2011-2012.  We are looking for volunteers to serve as panelists to score student presentations for Serra High School’s Senior Exhibitions.  Senior Exhibitions provide our Seniors an opportunity to showcase their knowledge, skills, interests, and experience at Serra High School and to show how their high school experience fits into their future goals.  The Seniors present before a panel consisting of teachers, business or community members, and parents.  We also have Junior students sitting on panels to familiarize them with the process for the following year.  Exhibitions are being held on May 26th and 27th.  You may volunteer to sit on more than one panel. SUMMER SCHOOL UPDATE:  It’s official, there is NO Summer School this summer for students in current grades 9-11.  Summer School offered at Madison and Lincoln High School is only available for current 12th graders, Class of 2011. Credit Recovery for Class of 2011 requires daily attendance at Madison High School.  In addition, some students with an IEP in grades 9-12 may be eligible to attend.  Have your student see his/her Case Manager.

A big THANK YOU goes out to the PTO for hosting the Teachers’ Luncheon on Wednesday, May 4th.  Teachers and staff were treated to a delicious lunch from Tio Leo’s and desserts galore!  Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make it a special day for our teachers and staff.

Congratulations to the Serra Conquistador Boys’ Tennis team.  They clenched the Eastern League Championship this year for the first time since 1996!  Coach Lorene Dabney, along with the three captains, Max Weishan (junior), Drew Churchill (senior). Jordan Wilkinson (senior), plotted and planned out every match line up to find the winning combination, which found them rising to the top the entire season.  With a league record of 11-1, the only team that gave them trouble was the Pointers of Point Loma, who beat Serra in the first round of play, but lost to them in the second round, killing Point Loma’s undefeated league record in six years!

This amazing team is made up of four seniors, Drew Churchill, Jordan Wilkinson, Cory Lozano and Cameron Rij; six juniors, Palmer Hayward, Brian Le, Jeff Mehnert, Brendan Ha, Andrew Lund, and Jeremy Velasco; two sophomores, Nathan Larsen and Triston Barnet; and three freshmen, Shayn Lozano, Hunter Garnier, and Cameron Wilkinson.
With an overall record of 15-4, Serra is also going to CIF playoffs starting Tuesday, May 10.  Good luck in CIF and congratulations on a fantastic winning season, Conquistadors!

SUMMER SCHOOL UPDATE:  It is official, there is NO Summer School this summer for students in current grades 9-11.  Summer School offered at Madison and Lincoln High School is only available for current 12th graders, Class of 2011. Credit Recovery for Class of 2011 requires daily attendance at Madison High School.  In addition, some students with an IEP in grades 9-12 may be eligible to attend, have your student see his/her Case Manager.

1.   We need a few more chaperones for Grad Night.  Two of you can sign up together, there are 2 chaperones per bus.  If you are available to help with Grad Night please email jd3hopps@aol.com.
2.  We are hoping for donations of 12 cases of water and 12 licorice buckets for the bus ride up to Disneyland.  If we get this donated it helps our senior booster account.  If you can donate please email gmcparlane@att.net.

STAR Testing is Going Well!
Student finished the English Language Arts and Math portions of the California Standards Tests this week.  They are doing well.  Keep up the good work!  Next week they will complete the Science and Social Science portions, followed by Life Science for the 10th graders.  Please remind your students to do their best on these very important exams.  Also, remind your students, even Seniors, that if they attend every day of STAR Testing/STAR Senior Activities they will receive 1 LOP credit. 

Volunteers Needed to Help With STAR Snacks!
STAR snack distribution will continue next week, on Monday 5/2, Tuesday 5/3, Thursday 5/5 and Friday 5/6.  If you can help, please show up at 7:30am on any of those mornings.  Please sign in at the main office and then proceed to the Media Center.  If you haven’t volunteered to help with STAR snacks before, don’t worry!  Volunteers in the Media Center will be there to show you what needs to be done.  This is a fun volunteer assignment and the kids love the volunteers who bring the snacks to the classrooms! Thank you for your support during testing time!

Graduation Information
As a reminder, this year’s graduation ceremony will be held downtown at Golden Hall in the San Diego Concourse.  Ticket Request forms have been sent home and we thank you for returning the forms promptly.  We’re processing the requests now and will inform all families soon as to how many tickets you will receive.  Seniors must present their school ID card to obtain their tickets. Lost tickets cannot be replaced.  Parking in the Concourse is limited and there is a charge, however there are many other pay lots within walking distance and there is a trolley stop at the Concourse.  Parents/Visitors: Please note that balloons are strictly prohibited in Golden Hall; any balloons brought to the facility will be confiscated by Golden Hall Security. STAR Testing begins on April 21st.  Just 20 days away!  Serra has never improved our API scores two years straight, but this will be our year!  Start talking to your student now about the importance of doing their best on the tests.  Remember to make sure they attend all days of STAR testing, get a good night’s sleep, and have a healthy breakfast.  Visit http://serra.sandi.net/star to see the STAR schedule.

GRADUATION UPDATE:

    
Graduation will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday June 10th.  Due to the installation of our new artificial turf field we will be unable to hold the ceremony in our stadium.  This year, for the first time, the ceremony will be held downtown at Golden Hall in the San Diego Concourse.  Golden Hall is a beautiful facility that seats 3,000 people.  Best of all, it is air conditioned!    Parking in the Concourse is limited and there is a charge, however there are many other pay lots within walking distance and there is a trolley stop right at the Concourse.  Many of the details are still being worked out.  We have started a Graduation section on our web site http:serra.sandi.net/graduation .  Currently the site only has pictures and maps but as more information becomes available we will share it on the web site and in the Q-Connection.

Just a reminder to parents that all students entering 7th-12th grades next year are required now by law to have a Tdap vaccination before they can enter school in the fall.  This vaccine is for the prevention of Tetanus, Diptheria, and Pertussis (also known as Whooping Cough).  Please check your child’s vaccination record and if they have not received this immunization, please take them to your family physician, or a county health clinic and get them vaccinated as soon a possible.  You must provide proof of this immunization to the school nurse before school enrollment next September.  If you have questions about this please contact Nurse Lanelle at the school (858-496-8342 x211) or see the information posted on our school website under the Health Office (http://serra.sandi.net/health).

There is no school next week (April 4th – 8th) due to Spring Break.  We hope everyone has a relaxing and restful week off.  School will resume on Monday, April 11th.

SDUSD News - Title I Threshold Survey for Serra High School.
Last December, the Board of Education took action to raise the Title I funding threshold from 40% to 75% over a five-year period. The motion, which carried, stipulated that staff engage the community in gaining feedback regarding this shift in funding allocation. As a result, the district has created a short survey parents can take to provide feedback. All parents are encouraged to participate by going to survey http://www.sandi.net/TitleI.
As you complete the survey, please keep in mind the action made by the board will reduce the funding Serra receives to support students.  Being identified as a Title I receiving school, Serra receives much needed funds for programs that help students needing extra support. If the plan goes to full implementation, Serra will lose much of its funding as the dollars will go toward schools that have a greater percentage of Title I students.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
    
Parents/Guardians, there are many ways you can help at Serra.  Please consider volunteering an hour or two of your time to support our students.  We can’t do it without you! 

ASSIST WITH ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAMS.  We need several volunteers to serve as test proctors during Advanced Placement (AP) testing.  Volunteers will be needed beginning May 2nd.  More information to follow.

ASSIST WITH DISTRIBUTION OF SNACKS DURING STAR TESTING. The PTO provides snacks for our students during testing, and plenty of hands are needed to help with this endeavor.  Volunteers will be needed in early April. 

SERVE ON A SENIOR EXHIBITION PANEL. Volunteers needed to sit on a panel and judge Senior Exhibition portfolios.  This is a great opportunity to learn about the knowledge and skills the students have acquired at Serra.  The students proudly demonstrate how their high school experience fits into their future goals.  Senior Exhibitions will be held on May 26th, 27th, 31st and June 1st.
