STAR TESTING 2013
STAR Testing begins next week. This is THE biggest event of the year. This is the chance to show the world what Serra students can do! Testing takes place over 8 days. Click here for the schedule. It is VERY important that your student is here for every test. As a reward, all students who are in attendance for all 8 days of testing will receive a LOP Point credit!
The scores from the standards tests given during STAR are a major factor in determining a school's Academic Performance Index (API). As you can see from the chart below, we have made some impressive gains in recent years. We all need to rally together and do our best if we are going to reach 800 this year! Everyone plays an important role. We are all in this together!
The
PTO has been working hard all year long raising money to provide our
students snacks during testing. They could still use some more help.
See below to learn how you can help raise Serra's test scores.
Electronic Devices And Testing:
Please share the following information with your student:
Due to numerous testing irregularities across the state, greater attention will be paid to electronic devices and testing. Cell phones, iPods, MP3 Players, iPhones, Tablets, or any other electronic devices are NOT allowed to be used, seen, or heard in the testing room. Electronic devices may be collected by the proctor before the test and returned when the test has been completed. If a student brings an electronic device to school, it must be turned completely off, be placed in a backpack, and the backpack must be placed on the floor or stored in another room. Electronic devices must not be kept on the student's person in the testing room. For example, they cannot be stored in pockets. No pictures are to be taken of the tests or answer documents. Nothing about the tests may be shared on Facebook or any other social media site.
If an electronic device is seen or heard AT ANY TIME in the testing room, REGARDLESS IF THE STUDENT WAS USING IT, the students test will become invalid and they will face further disciplinary action, including possible suspension. Please encourage your student to keep their electronic devices at home on testing days.
You Can Help With STAR Testing!
We have a big opportunity for volunteers to help pack and distribute snacks for Star testing on the dates below. We need 8-10 people per day. We'll start at 7:30 each morning in the back of the Media Center. If you can put in even a little time, it will be immensely helpful and very much appreciated. You can see that this is a large job, requiring a lot of bodies. Please share to anyone you believe may be interested in lending a hand.

ELEVATED Town Hall Meeting
ELEVATED Student-Relations Committee will be hosting a youth-led Town Hall Meeting scheduled for Friday, April 26th from 6:00-8:00pm at Newbreak Church in Tierrasanta .
The purpose of this event is to support community efforts to decrease rates of binge and underage drinking. For the past couple months, ELEVATED students have been working very hard to organize this THM by creating videos and skits focused around the prevention of teenage alcohol use.
ELEVATED's Town Hall Meeting is presented in collaboration with SAY San Diego and the Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Town Hall program.
Aside from ELEVATED's contributions, we'll have some significant guest speakers in attendance. The San Diego Police Department will be presenting information about the Social Host Ordinance. Mothers Against Drunk Driving will be delivering a parent presentation entitled, "Power of Parents", which focuses on strategies for talking to teens about alcohol. During this parent presentation, the youth in the audience will have the opportunity to participate in a Zumba fitness class. A Health Educator from Care1st Health will be talking about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Lastly, Serra's GEAR UP counselors will be there sharing internship and extracurricular opportunities for students over the summer!
Not to mention, FREE dinner will be provided, and we'll have door prizes all night!
