USD will open the doors to the Pavilion at Noon on Monday.
No balloons or airhorns will be allowed in the Pavilion.
The Pavilion is a short walk from the closest parking lot, however shuttles will be available to transport guests.
Guests are not allowed on the floor with the graduates.
Guest may not block aisles to take pictures.
Remember: We are guests on the USD Campus. All graduates and their families/guests are expected to abide by the USD rules and regulations and follow directions of the USD staff.
NOTE: There may be other Graduation ceremonies on the USD Campus at the same time as Serra. Serra's will be in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Remind your guests to be specific if they are asking directions from USD staff.

From The Serra Library
Students it is time to start looking through closets, rooms, and cars for library and textbooks. Textbook return will begin Monday, June 3rd through the English classes.

Serra High Student Group Works to Keep Teens Safe
During Grad Season and Through the Summer
“A lot of
parents think it’s just ‘kids being kids,’ but underage drinking is much more
than that,” according to San Diego Police Officer Holly Tafoya.
Tafoya was one of the
featured speakers at a recent youth-led Town Hall Meeting focusing on binge and
underage drinking. The event was the
first of its kind in Tierrasanta, and was organized by Serra High School’s ELEVATED
Student Relations Committee.
Tafoya pointed out that
underage drinking can lead to other
problems beyond drunk driving. She said
that some parents have a mistaken belief that they can provide a safe place for
underage drinking.
More than 50 people attended
the Town Hall meeting, including many parents and even a few grandparents. They got some eye-opening information from
Officer Tafoya about the legal implications of allowing underage drinking at a
party.
“This is important, whether
you’re a parent, or a student in high school or college,” she said.
Tafoya explained that every
city in San Diego County has a Social Host Ordinance, or “house party
law.” There’s also a county ordinance
covering areas outside city limits.
“San Diego’s city ordinance
says that anyone who hosts a party in the city of San Diego may be cited if
there are any underage drinkers,” Tafoya said.
“Conviction means a minimum fine of $100.”
Tenth-grader Adrian
Patterson helped organize the event. He believes that most people don’t know
how much a party host can be fined when minors are drinking, or when a party
gets out of hand.
“Everybody talks about
keeping alcohol away from kids,” he said.
“People say this and that, but when you attach so much money to it they
say, ‘wait, what?’ Having to pay a fine gets
their attention.”
Alicia Vicencio, from
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) was another expert who spoke at the Town
Hall.
Vicencio passed out MADD’s
“Power of Parents” handbook, and explained how parents can talk to their
children about alcohol. She told them
it’s important to keep kids from drinking at home parties.
“When you prevent underage drinking at your party, you’re not just
preventing a DUI that night,” Vicencio said.
“You’re also preventing alcohol problems in the future.”
Vicencio
also gave advice to teenagers about how to refuse alcohol when someone offers
it to them, acting out a few different scenarios with Adrian Patterson.
Other
ELEVATED students took the stage to present four skits. They demonstrated how parents can send clear
messages to their kids about underage drinking.
The
Town Hall concluded with a survey by Sergeant Leo Castillo of the California
National Guard. He used hand-held device
to capture audience responses to questions about substance abuse issues. That information will be used to assess
community needs, and to plan future events.
